How to Make Slow Cooker Ham and Bean Soup
The full recipe instructions are at the bottom of this page, but here’s a quick overview of what goes into making this soup:
Step 1: Prepare the Beans
One of the best parts of this recipe is that you don’t need to soak your beans. Simply drain and rinse your beans before adding them to your slow cooker.
Your bean package (recommended: Hurst’s HamBeens 15 Bean Soup® Mix) should also come with a small flavoring packet. Set this aside for the end of the recipe.
Step 2: Add Ingredients to Slow Cooker
Next, you’ll add everything to your slow cooker except for the diced tomatoes and flavoring packet.
Step 3: Cook for 5 – 7 Hours on High
This is when the magic happens! Your soup will cook, covered, on high for 5 – 7 hours. This is enough time to cook the beans and create a delicious flavor. Try not to open your crockpot while the soup cooks so that you can keep it as hot as possible.
Step 4: Add Tomatoes + Seasoning Packet
The last step of this recipe is to add your diced tomatoes and the seasoning packet from your bean mix. Do this last so that the diced tomatoes don’t overcook and the seasoning doesn’t overpower the other flavors.
Simmer for 30 more minutes on high heat, covered.
You can keep your soup warm until you’re ready to eat, and then serve it with cornbread, crackers, or over rice.
