Organization Hacks: Go Up, Not Out
Below, you can find hacks on creating more storage and organizing your things by using wall space instead of adding furniture to the floor. Working with the walls of your room is a great way to create dynamic shapes that double as decor and storage!
Hack #1: Shelving
Using shelves is one of those simple organizational hacks that anyone in any space can use. In smaller spaces, you will need to get a little more creative! If you have corners in your space, take advantage of them! Corner shelving is a perfect way to accentuate the structure of the space, create dynamic shapes, and give you more surface area to store or display your things.
Hack #2: Window Molding
An essential part of maximizing storage in small spaces is to use what you already have in your space. So, if you have windows with molding that has a slight ledge, you can use that ledge as a shelf to display photos, art, and more! You can also install floating shelves over your windows to create a more dramatic window shelf. Window shelves are great for plants, too! If you do not have space above your windows, get creative with window boxes meant for planters inside your space instead of out the window. Window boxes can be great bookshelves, plant holders, or storage for knickknacks!
Hack #3: Wall Hooks
Wall hooks are the first of several hacks that use wall space as a place to keep and organize your things. You can get beautiful wall hooks in various styles and aesthetics to complement your space. Wall hooks are great for hanging jewelry, coats and outerwear, bags, towels, and more! They are super convenient and easy to use, plus they do not take up floor space as a coat rack does!
Hack #4: Peg Boards
You can install peg boards onto your walls! Plus, you can find cool and modern pegboards, not just the ones they sell at the hardware store. Those who are not familiar with pegboards are large boards with holes drilled into them. They also have pegs or dowels that fit into the holes on which you can place a shelf. Pegboards are great because you can move the pegs and shelves around to create different lengths and different heights of the shelves as your needs change! You can also hang things from the pegs to create dynamics.
Hack #5: Door Organizers
Hanging door organizers are a great way to create storage and organize your things. You can store shoes, pantry items, toiletries, office items, toys, clothes, and more in a hanging door organizer! They are also an excellent option for baby items! Plus, if you have a closet, you can have the organizer face the inside of your closet, so you do not have to see it all the time!
Organization Hacks: Using Your Floors Creatively
In this section, you can find great hacks on using floor spaces in strategic ways to help you organize without overwhelming your space.
Hack #6: Under the Bed
Although your mother may have raised you not to put your things under your bed, you should! You can purchase bed frames that come with under-bed drawers and storage spaces. You can also get storage bins with wheels that you can roll out from under your bed whenever you need to!
Hack #7: Furniture
If you have a small space, furniture can quickly eat away at the available floor space. That is why it is important to utilize furniture pieces with plenty of storage space! Tables with drawers or open spaces beneath them are perfect for extra organization spaces. Get a desk with a section of drawers instead of just four legs. Toy chests are another furniture piece that can organize your items. You can store things inside like clothes, toys, or blankets and display decor on top!
Hack #8: Cubbies
Cubbies are a fantastic way to merge using floor and wall space wisely! You can get cubbies in different sizes to organize kids’ toys, shoes, coats, outerwear, books, blankets, clothing, cleaning supplies, or more!
Organzitation Hacks: Organization Within
Organizing inside drawers, bins, and closets is important for optimizing your small space! In this section, you can find hacks to help you organize those spaces so that you can make the most of them!
Hack #9: Drawers
You can use organizational bins or containers to hold your items inside your drawers! This hack is perfect for bathrooms because you can keep other toiletries in specific containers to keep everything organized! Use containers in your kitchen cupboards to organize your spices, pantry items, and cooking utensils! In your silverware drawer, use a utensil organizer so that knives, spoons, and forks all have a designated spot. This will help to declutter your drawers. You can also use the bin method in your clothing drawers or cubbies to help organize different types of clothing, like shirts from pants!
Hack #10: Closets
Closets are a great place to store things, but you have to keep your items in an organized way. If you do not, then everything will become chaotic. Use large plastic bins or baskets on the floor to hold larger items like shoes or bedding. Use shoe racks, hanging closet organizers, hanging jewelry organizers, and consider installing shelving in your closet to help everything have a good home! Find a method, like color coordinating your clothes, that helps you find everything in your closet easily. This will make you feel more organized and in control.
Hack #12: The Junk Drawer Method
Everyone seems to have a drawer that they toss items into at random. If you have a junk drawer like this, do your best to clean it out once every two weeks to keep it from becoming messy. Keeping this drawer clear is perfect for putting something new away, but you haven’t found a home for it yet.
Hack #13: Find Homes Quickly
When you get something new, do not let it sit around! This hack is perfect for helping prevent the build-up of random objects around your house. Give yourself one to three days to find a place for the item and make sure that you do not just shove it somewhere you find space. You may have to reorganize, but it will pay off to have it be in a proper spot!
Hack #14: Clean Frequently
Make sure that you clean and tidy up your space often. This can help you find things that do not have homes and help you feel more organized! Keeping shoes and clothing off the floor, beds made, and other general tidiness will help you remain on top of your organization! If you keep everything at a baseline of tidy, then when a day comes where you have to organize some stuff, you won’t have to clean the floors, put away the dishes, and do normal tidying before! It will feel like less work on those days.
Hack #15: Stackable Storage
Lastly, use bins or small plastic drawer bins inside cupboards and closets or under sinks to help organize toiletries, cleaning supplies, beauty items, and other things you store inside those spaces!
I hope these organization hacks have been helpful to you and your small space!
